WSP is currently initiating a search for a Supervising Transportation / NEPA Planner for our Raleigh or Charlotte office.

The Planner will manage projects and tasks, lead junior staff, build and maintain client relationships, and participate in business development activities to help achieve the sales, revenue, and project delivery goals of the Carolinas Planning and Environment Group.

Candidates should demonstrate experience in major metropolitan transportation markets in North Carolina, leading and delivering work tasks for transportation projects and studies including data collection, research, and documentation contributing to the development of statewide, regional, and local transportation plans, corridor plans, transit plans and studies, multi-modal feasibility studies, planning reports, NEPA documents, policy documentation and research, and other analyses. Demonstrated experience as a part of pursuit teams and contributions to proposal and business development is also desired. Day to day work will require management of project financials, project team leadership, and delivery of transportation projects and tasks, and interaction and collaboration with the North Carolina Planning and Environment team, governmental agencies, contractors, the public and other WSP personnel.

The successful candidate must be a team player, a self-starter, and demonstrate strong analytical, communication, collaboration, and technical skills. Ability and interest in mentoring and managing younger staff is a must.

Major Duties:

  • Manage projects and tasks, including staffing, financials, and quality reviews.

  • Collect, analyze and interpret data (demographic, economic, physical, etc.) and summarize it in written format and in tables, charts and maps.

  • Prepare, edit, format and produce technical reports and displays.

  • Coordinate and/or participate in the development and execution of stakeholder and public involvement activities associated with planning projects.

  • Develop strong working relationships with clients, potential clients, and partner firms to support business development activities.

  • Mentor and supervise junior staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Planning, Geography, Engineering or a related discipline is required;

  • Minimum of 10 years progressively responsible relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated experience in leading planning projects or tasks.

  • Demonstrated experience in NEPA documentation.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and work as part of a team, work cross-functionally and think critically and strategically.

  • Familiarity with North Carolina transportation planning issues.

  • Ability to develop rapport across all levels of the organization and with clients.

  • Ability to effectively present and communicate ideas orally and in written form.

  • Possess a high level of energy and enthusiasm.

  • Good organizational skills, multi-tasking capabilities and attention to detail.

  • Experience with project financials

  • Available to begin work in the Raleigh or Charlotte office immediately.

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Geographic Information Systems is a plus.

  • Ability to travel out of the immediate area and to work outside of regular work hours if needed.

  • Ability to work in this country immediately required.

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Planning, Geography, Engineering or a related discipline is required;

  • AICP preferred.
