Position: Patient Relations Specialist

Location:

Hours: 1 day a week 7p-7a

The essential duties and responsibilities of a Patient Relations Specialist for the ED Overhead department includes:

-Assisting or Overseeing the Emergency Department (ED) volunteers

-Interacting with families in the ED to provide information regarding the condition of the patient and/or treatments while providing emotional support and/or crisis counseling

-Monitoring the patient's for any signs of abuse and reporting any signs to the physicians, RNs and/or the authorities as necessary

-Notifying the pastoral care/clergy as needed to help families with support during crises or critical situations

-Rounding on ED patients while frequently offering assistance, emotional support and crisis counseling to the extent required

-Rounding on the Emergency Department waiting area to provide updates on the department's flow and the patient status several times per shift

-Assisting with the flow of the emergency department by making unoccupied beds as needed, and providing transport of patients for admission and to other designated areas within the facility

-Keeping the patient informed of any delays

-Acting on the patient's behalf in response to their comments, concerns and problems in a confidential manner

-Getting proper documentation of their complaints, referrals and/or following up with phone calls

-Arranging services and/or giving information about services to the patients and/or their families such as homeless shelters, ATC programs, abuse shelters or DSS, and initiating the provision of documentation of follow up resources

-Conducting periodic studies of the patient's perception of our hospital services and recommending any alternatives to improve this service. This is completed through a one-to-one discussion with patients and discharge phone calls. Discharge phone calls should be completed and documented for each month

-Conducting follow up phone calls with specific high-risk patients at the recommendation of the ED staff/physicians

-Organizing and coordinating community based educational information and providing information to the patients when requested

-Assisting with the coordination of medical transfers and the initiation of outpatient medical needs such as oxygen or home medical equipment

-Initiating and coordinating the placement of behavioral patients in either an inpatient setting or in outpatient care with a referral

Qualifications

Candidate is required to have one (1) to two (2) years of related experience and/or training OR a Bachelor's degree (B.A.) (preferred) with a focus on psychology or mental health OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Candidate is also required to havea Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
