WABTEC R&D Formulation Scientist in Maxton, North Carolina


Railroad Friction Products Corporation manufactures COBRA high-friction and low-friction composition brake shoes, specialty shoes and disc brake linings for freight, locomotive and transit vehicles.

Currently we are seeking several entry to mid level research and development formulation scientists to join our team to advance the existing product portfolio and develop next generation materials to support our core business.



The R&D department is responsible for the development and maintenance of friction material and backing stock formulations associated with the development and qualification of new friction products, primarily brake shoes and disc brake pads for rail vehicles. Working within a team including all departments, the R&D Formulation Scientist is responsible for developing a new formulations or selecting an existing formulation for a new application and evaluating it to all requirements, including performance, cost, manufacturability, and raw materials.

Essential Duties/Responsibilitiesincludes the following. Other duties may be assigned, including but not limited to.

  • Develop new friction materials and processes.

  • Define formulations.

  • Plan and arrange for R&D technicians to make and test sub-scale prototypes, including chemical and physical property tests such as DSC, TGA, density, particle size, and strength.

  • Document and report test results to the team.

  • Arrange for PUR Technician to make full scale parts.

  • Collaborate with Project Engineers and Dynamometer technicians to define, conduct, and analyze dynamometer tests, both sub-scale and full scale.

  • Cooperate with the project team to verify and validate candidate products to all requirements.

  • Support the Process Engineer, Manufacturing and QA to define and validate the production process and QA procedures.

  • Research into the chemical and physical properties and interactions of raw materials and processes and their effect on the performance of friction materials.

  • Evaluate and approve alternate raw materials and suppliers.

  • Investigate manufacturing and customer issues.

  • Managing projects.


Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, BioChemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Organic Chemistry or related field with 0-3 yrs' experience.
